Insider mentions Rams' Sean McVay's playcalling appeal in trade talks around QB riding the bench

Anthony Richardson is in a challenging spot as the backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts behind Daniel Jones. Trade speculation has surfaced around Richardson's future, with one angle highlighting the possibility of him joining Sean McVay's Los Angeles Rams.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler wrote, "One intriguing option is Anthony Richardson Sr., who is stuck behind Daniel Jones in Indianapolis. My sense is Richardson would be open to joining a premier playcaller such as Sean McVay as a developmental player so he can reset for 2026."

Adding context, ESPN's Dan Graziano recalled that some teams had inquired about Richardson during free agency, but the Colts made clear they weren't looking to trade him.

Graziano added: "So far, they've insisted they aren't, but you're right. If Jones keeps playing well and leads them to their first division title in more than a decade, who's to say the Colts don't decide he's their future at quarterback and sign him to an extension?"

He also highlighted the difficulties teams face when acquiring starting quarterbacks midseason, noting that they often have too little time to fully integrate into new systems, making developmental prospects like Richardson potentially more attractive.

Los Angeles currently has Matthew Stafford, but his career is winding down. If the Rams can acquire and develop Richardson well, they may not need to look elsewhere at quarterback.
