The Los Angeles Chargers might have lost more than just a game after falling to the Washington Commanders in Week 5.
Following the contest, rookie running back Omarion Hampton was seen wearing a boot on his left ankle, which means he didn't escape Sunday's game unscathed.
"Omarion Hampton just left the locker room with a walking boot on his left ankle," The Athletic's Daniel Popper reported.
On Monday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Hampton is dealing with an ankle sprain and is set to undergo more tests to determine its severity.
Rapoport added that Hampton might be forced to miss time with the injury.
"He's dealing with an ankle injury," Rapoport said of Hampton on Monday. "He was spotted in a walking boot leaving the stadium. Generally, that is an indication that a player could miss some time. He's going to have some tests today just to determine how bad that ankle sprain is."
If Hampton is forced to miss time, he would be the second injury the Chargers have experienced at the running back position, as Najee Harris is out for the year with a torn Achilles' tendon.
The Chargers are now left with Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal and Amar Johnson, with the latter two being on the practice squad. Vidal will almost certainly get a promotion to the 53-man roster at some point.
That said, those options simply aren't sufficient for the Chargers, who are trying to compete for an AFC West crown. General manager Joe Hortiz needs to make a move at the position, whether that be a signing or trade.
Making a significant trade at the position isn't out of the question, even if Hampton isn't out an extended period of time. The Chargers were already in need of more depth given what they have behind Hampton.
