Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is a pretty polarizing player. Some think he belongs in the conversation with the best QBs today, while others view him as more middle of the pack.
Apparently Alex Kay of Bleacher Report falls into the latter group, as he recently named Herbert as one of the most overrated QBs in the entire NFL, citing his inconsistency and lack of postseason success.
“The Los Angeles Chargers have been one of the most maddeningly unreliable teams over the last half-decade,” Kay wrote. “One of the reasons for this is the lack of stable production from quarterback Justin Herbert, an immensely talented but wildly inconsistent passer.”
Herbert has a record of 48-41 as a starter with the Chargers, and he’s put up some solid numbers over the years. He’s thrown 156 career touchdowns (and counting) and over 23,000 yards. He has also cut his interceptions compared to early in his career.
Herbert had at least 10 interceptions in each of his first three seasons. But then he had just 10 combined over the past two seasons. He’s up in eight interceptions already this season though, so he might need to refocus on taking care of the ball.
Herbert also has a lack of postseason success as he’s played in just two playoff games at this point in his career and lost them both. Until he can lead the Chargers on a deep playoff run, there will likely continue to be people who view him as overrated.
The good news is that Herbert should have an opportunity to do just that this year. The Chargers are firmly in the playoff picture in the AFC with a record of 7-3. If they can finish out the season strong and make a playoff run, Herbert will likely be able to shed the “overrated” label.
