The Los Angeles Chargers have a major injury concern with quarterback Justin Herbert following the Week 13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Herbert exited the game briefly after suffering an injury to his left hand. After coming out of the locker room following an examination, Herbert was sporting a glove on his injured hand.
Following the game, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed that Herbert has a break in his left hand that will require surgery on Monday.
Harbaugh wasn't sure if Herbert would miss time.
"Chargers QB Justin Herbert has a break in his left hand and will have surgery tomorrow, coach Jim Harbaugh said. Harbaugh wasn’t sure if Herbert will miss time," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.
Herbert is fortunate the injury is to his non-throwing hand or else he would miss significant time and quite possibly the rest of the season.
The last thing the Chargers can afford is for Herbert to miss any time.
Los Angeles is in the thick of a playoff race and will only be one game behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West if they lose on Sunday night.
If Herbert is forced to miss time, backup quarterback Trey Lance would get the start in his place.
Lance looked good during the preseason, but the regular season is a very different animal and he will obviously be a clear downgrade from Herbert.
We will likely know more about Herbert's situation on Monday following his surgery. Until then, Chargers fans will hold their collective breath.
