TL;DR
- Greg Olson replaces Chip Kelly as Raiders offensive coordinator.
- Olson previously heavily utilized tight ends Jared Cook and Darren Waller.
- This change could significantly boost Brock Bowers's involvement and production.
- Bowers may excel in the final six games of the 2025 season.
The Las Vegas Raiders' change at offensive coordinator could be great news for superstar tight end Brock Bowers.
The Raiders have opted to dismiss Chip Kelly after only 11 games as offensive coordinator, appointing quarterbacks coach Greg Olson to take over the role.
Olson previously held the offensive coordinator position for The Raiders on two occasions, and he also had a period in that capacity with the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
During Olson's prior tenure as the Raiders' offensive coordinator between 2018 and 2021, a notable pattern was the significant utilization of tight ends.
The data comes from Fantasy Points' Ryan Heath:
Under Olson's guidance in 2018, Jared Cook, then 31, experienced his career's peak season. He achieved personal records with 68 catches totaling 896 yards, receiving an impressive 101 targets on his way to his inaugural Pro Bowl selection.
From 2019 through 2020, Darren Waller garnered an impressive 262 targets, accumulating 2,341 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, establishing him as one of the NFL's premier tight ends.
During 2021, Olson's final year as offensive coordinator, Waller played in just 11 games because of an injury. Despite this, he still accumulated 665 receiving yards and was on track to exceed 1,000 yards for the season.
If past events are any indication, Olson won't repeat Kelly's error of insufficient Bowers's involvement in the game.
Olson clearly knows what to do with a talented pass-catching tight end, and that could lead to Bowers taking off over the final six games of the 2025 campaign.
