The NFL world has been talking nonstop about the unlikely return of Philip Rivers, and rightfully so. After four seasons away from the NFL, the 44-year old eight-time Pro Bowler came out of retirement to join the quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts after Daniel Jones tore his Achilles.
This led to many jokes being made about other former stars potentially coming out of retirement, which inevitably led to landing on Tom Brady. The seven-time Super Bowl champion is no 48 years old and the No. 1 commentator for Fox's NFL coverage alongside Kevin Burkhardt. Joining The Herd on Thursday, Brady joked about Rivers retiring and then unretiring.
"Who retires and then unretires and then is ultimately going to retire again?" Brady joked. "Who does that? That’s ridiculous for Philip to do that."
Brady, of course, says this with a very tongue-in-cheek tone, as he infamously retired and quickly unretired. Brady was then asked if he could play at the age of 48, to which he said yes.
"Yes, I certainly could," Brady said. "I think the answer for me would be yes.
However, the former Patriots and Bucs quarterback revealed that he can't unretire and play due to being an owner.
"I’m not allowed to anymore because I’m a minority owner of the Raiders, so I can’t unretire."
So for any Las Vegas Raiders fans who got their hopes up of seeing Brady dust off his cleats and take the field at nearly 50 years old, temper those expectations.
Everyone will certainly be watching on Sunday when Rivers takes the field against the Seattle Seahawks. Brady and Burkhardt will not be on the call, though. They will be in Los Angeles for the Rams hosting the Detroit Lions in a game that the Lions desperately need to win in order to keep pace in a crowded NFC playoff race. The Rams currently hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and they would certainly love to see Rivers pull off some magic and lead the Colts to victory in order to give them some more breathing room in the NFC West.
