It is official: the Las Vegas Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.

It was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, and Raiders head coach Pete Carroll has since confirmed the move in a statement given to team reporter Paul Gutierrez.

"I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders," Carroll wrote.

"I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future."

Kelly's firing comes on the heels of the Raiders suffering their ninth loss of the season in what was just the latest pathetic performance from the offense against the Cleveland Browns in Week 12.

Las Vegas' unit has been incompetent for the vast majority of the season and that has led to it being one of the worst offenses in the NFL through 12 weeks.

The Raiders supposedly upgraded at the quarterback position, yet things have been worse on offense with Geno Smith. Now, some of that is certainly on Smith's poor showing this season, but Kelly's play-calling did nothing to help matters.

Talk about not getting your money's worth from the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL.

Kelly is the second coach the Raiders have fired this season, as the team also parted ways with special teams coach Tom McMahon.

We can't forget who put this staff together, though.

Carroll is just as much to blame for the Raiders' struggles as anyone else and his handling of the roster has been bizarre, to say the least.

Even with the Raiders' season over, Carroll simply refuses to give his younger players more looks and that's coaching malpractice, at best.

We wouldn't be so sure that Carroll will be safe at season's end.
