Xavier Worthy injury update: Latest news on Chiefs wide receiver's status for Week 2 image

The Kansas City Chiefs were already short-handed at wide receiver in Week 1, so it was particularly bad news that Xavier Worthy went down with an injury.

Worthy was injured on the Chiefs' very first offensive series of the 2025 season when he ran into tight end Travis Kelce, leading to a dislocated shoulder.

Luckily, Worthy is not going to miss the rest of the season, but his status for Week 2 remained up in the air throughout the week. He was a non-participant in practice on Wednesday before being limited on Thursday and Friday.

"I'd probably tell you it's slim, but there's still a chance to play, yeah," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said on Friday.

On Saturday, we got our official answer on whether or not Worthy will suit up on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Xavier Worthy injury update

After being listed as doubtful on Friday, which at least gave him a tiny chance to play, the Chiefs downgraded Worthy to out on Saturday, making it official.

This will be the first game Worthy has missed in his NFL career after playing in all 17 contests in 2024. This is certainly not a surprising result, as putting Worthy out there so soon after the injury would have only increased his chances of further injury and it's way too early in the season to be risking that.

With Worthy out, Rashee Rice suspended and Jalen Royals still not able to play (he was ruled out on Friday), the Chiefs will once again lean on wide receivers Marquise Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton as their top three.

Brown led all Chiefs pass-catchers in targets (16), receptions (10) and yards (99) last week, so he's the best play among Chiefs wideouts in fantasy football. He's a flex option.

As for Smith-Schuster and Thornton, neither one should be in lineups. Kelce becomes an even more attractive play than usual with Worthy sidelined.
