Why is Rashee Rice suspended? How 2024 car crash resulted in NFL suspension, legal action against Chiefs WR image

As the Kansas City Chiefs look to win the AFC for a fourth consecutive year, their offense will lack some firepower to begin the season.

In the lead-up to Week 1 of the 2025 campaign, Chiefs standout wide receiver Rashee Rice accepted a six-game suspension handed down by the NFL. The ban, which applies to the first six games of the 2025 season, was the resolution to a saga that began nearly 18 months prior.

Without Rice, Kansas City will rely on other receivers as three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes distributes the ball to the team’s remaining pass-catchers.

Here is what to know about Rice's suspension and when to expect him back on the field.

Why is Rashee Rice suspended?

Rice is suspended for his role in a high-speed car crash that occurred in late March 2024.

The Chiefs wide receiver was identified as the driver of a Lamborghini Urus that caused a six-car accident in Dallas on March 30, 2024. Rice was driving 119 mph, and four other vehicles were damaged, including a Corvette he was leasing.

Dashcam footage of the incident shows occupants of the vehicles leaving the scene on foot. On April 10, 2024, police issued an arrest warrant for Rice, announcing he had been charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injuries.

Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges and, in July 2025, was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days in jail.
