We now have an injury diagnosis on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Mahomes has suffered a torn ACL, which will end his 2025 campaign.
"Breaking: Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in his left knee, an MRI confirmed. He is out for the remainder of the season," Jones reported.
Hours after leaving the game with his injury, Mahomes took to social media to say he would be back and better than ever once he recovers.
"Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever," Mahomes wrote.
Now, the concern will shift to if Mahomes will be able to get healthy in time for the start of the 2026 campaign.
The typical recovery time for a torn ACL is about nine months .
If that timeline holds, Mahomes would be out until September, and as we know the first game of the season is usually around the first week of September, so it could be very close.
It has been a brutal season for the Chiefs, who just couldn't get going consistently on either side of the ball in 2025.
Their playoff hopes were erased on Sunday, when Kansas City lost to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.
That marks the first time the Chiefs haven't made the postseason in the Mahomes era, so this is no doubt uncharted territory for Kansas City.
It'll be interesting to see if the Chiefs undergo significant changes during the offseason. One would assume that'll be the case after the disappointing year.
But, right now, the top priority is getting Mahomes healthy and back on the field at 100%. He is the entire franchise and nothing is more important than his health.
