Chiefs urged to make blockbuster Patrick Mahomes trade after injury capped miserable season image

The Kansas City Chiefs just finished their worst season in a decade.

For once, they are home when the playoffs begin. And their superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is injured, having torn his ACL in December.

Is this a simple fix? Or do the Chiefs have a serious facelift to undergo?

Well, Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon goes so far as to say the Chiefs should consider trading Mahomes.

That'd only be the biggest blockbuster in the history of the NFL.

"Not only has the defense regressed, but the quarterback problem is also becoming significant. Mahomes will be coming off a major knee injury in 2026, which could impact his improvisational abilities at the very least," Gagnon writes. "It also has to be stated that in the last three seasons, the 30-year-old ranks 20th among 31 qualified passers with a 92.0 rating. In that span, only Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield have thrown more interceptions."

The troubling part of that pitch is that it also makes it sound like the Chiefs would be selling low on Mahomes.

Another team would surely still deal a lot for him, but coming off the knee injury and a lesser season, it might not be a maximized return.

Gagnon hedges his bets a little bit later on in his explanation.

"Mahomes is too much of a staple for the franchise to move on this quickly, and it would likely cost them a ton of money to trade him (even if he lifts his no-trade clause)," Gagnon writes. "He's probably not going anywhere, but the Chiefs shouldn't rule it out in the event of a blockbuster offer. Regardless, they need to regroup and rebuild around him in dramatic fashion or this whole thing will begin to rot."

The clear part of this is that there is still work to do.

A Mahomes trade is highly unlikely, but you can never say never. The Chiefs likely need to do something bold to get this ship moving back in the right direction.
