The 2025 version of the Kansas City Chiefs has been one we haven't seen since Patrick Mahomes was named the starter.

They have been inconsistent, have lost close games, and against the Denver Broncos, silly mistakes at crucial times were a big reason for the loss.

We are so used to seeing the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, Super Bowls, and as division winners, but this year, they don't seem to have their usual juice.

And for CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, he spoke to multiple coaches and front office executives about the Chiefs, and for one defensive coach, maybe the reason for Kansas City's poor play is all mental.

"The league saw Philly beat them down," the coach said. "And not just beat them but actually pummel them. Then they start the season with a loss in Brazil and again to Philly. Doubt starts to creep in."

Do Chiefs really have doubts?

For a team that has gone to three straight Super Bowls, won the division every year under Mahomes, and has made it to at least the AFC Championship game in every season with No. 15, I do find that hard to believe.

But there's no denying that the 2025 Chiefs aren't as buttoned up as previous teams, and at 5-5, with the division out of reach and even a playoff spot in doubt, we haven't seen a Mahomes team in this shape before.

Is it really a mental thing as the coach suggests? The Super Bowl loss, coupled with the poor start and losing to the Eagles again, has played a role in the Chiefs' up-and-down season.

The only people who know that are inside the building, but it does offer food for thought.
