The Indianapolis Colts called off the dogs.

Philip Rivers had played valiantly Monday night, but a late pick-six sealed a defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

That brought in Riley Leonard at QB with a few minutes left.

Why is Riley Leonard in at QB for Colts?

Leonard came in to prevent any damage to Rivers in the final minutes.

Rivers had done everything he could, but the Colts' defense couldn't get a stop.

Leonard is a sixth-round rookie who is more likely to be with Indy next year. He has to get some action down the stretch for some experience with Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson both out injured.

Rivers may still play in Week 17, but for at least a few minutes on Monday night, there was no comeback to be played for.

This was a chance to protect Rivers and get Leonard a few live NFL snaps.

It may not matter long term, but it was worth a shot.
