Before this season, when Indianapolis Colts fans noticed Daniel Jones was wearing No. 17, they pointed out that it's the same number Philip Rivers wore when he played QB for the Colts.
Never would they have expected what's happening now.
Rivers last played for the Colts on Jan. 9, 2021. That was his last NFL game.
But this week, Rivers signed with the Colts in the aftermath of Jones' season-ending torn Achilles injury.
And while there are a lot more important things at play as Indy tries to save its season, the jersey number did immediately create curiosity.

What jersey number is Philip Rivers with the Colts?
Philip Rivers will wear the number 17 with the Colts.
It's the uniform number he has had his entire NFL career, dating back to the Chargers.

How can Philip Rivers wear same number as Daniel Jones?
If Jones remained on the active roster, Rivers couldn't have his number. They could negotiate a deal to swap digits, but they couldn't have the same 17 at the same time.
Jones, though, has been placed on Injured Reserve. He's no longer on the active roster. Because of that, Rivers can take his digits.
It's not a situation the Colts wanted to be in, but the 44-year old Rivers may be their last hope at saving the season, and at least he gets to rock the number he's comfortable in.
