Philip Rivers had the national spotlight on Monday night.

For most of the primetime opportunity, the 44-year old Indianapolis Colts QB did well, too.

The big problem was Indy's defense, which couldn't stop the San Francisco 49ers.

But when the Colts had the ball, Rivers did a lot of the things he always did well.

Why is Philip Rivers playing for the Colts?

Rivers is playing for the Colts because they needed a QB.

Daniel Jones tore his Achilles, and Anthony Richardson is out with an eye injury.

The Colts signed Rivers a few weeks ago because they were still in playoff contention and needed someone to try to keep them there.

It was between Rivers, sixth-round rookie Riley Leonard and practice-squad QB Brett Rypien.

Rivers hadn't played since Jan. 9, 2021, when he lost a playoff game with the Colts.

But he had familiarity with Shane Steichen's offense, and so he came back, removing himself from Hall of Fame eligibility for five years.

Rivers' throwing mechanics are similar. He's got 10 kids now, not 9. And he's still talking a big game, too.

It's been fun to watch.
