The Indianapolis Colts are trying something new.

For their Monday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16, the Colts are wearing a black helmet.

If it's an unfamiliar look in the minds of Indy fans, that's because it is. The Colts simply don't do this.

Why are the Colts wearing a black helmet?

The Colts are wearing a black helmet as part of a new uniform combination.

This is how ESPN described the look:

"The Indianapolis Colts will wear their 'Indiana Nights' look on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers. The design includes a black helmet for the first time in team history as well as a blue with texture in a heather style -- the first of its kind in the league. A "C" logo appears on the front upper corner of the uniform with a silhouette of the state of Indiana inside it."

As written there, the Colts have never worn a black helmet before in the regular season.

There are many reasons why teams break out new uniform combinations, some of them financial, some of them for brand building.

It's certainly a different look for Indy, but not necessarily a bad one.

If the Colts win in these helmets, they'll like them a lot more than if they lose.
