The Indianapolis Colts are welcoming Philip Rivers back, but a franchise legend won't be following in his footsteps.
With the news that Rivers is joining the Colts at 44 years old and after five years in retirement, the team's former center, Jeff Saturday, jokingly made the announcement that he won't be joining the signal-caller.
"Jeff Saturday revealed this morning on [Get Up on ESPN] that he will not be coming out of retirement to play again for the Colts," Schefter said. "At age 50, Saturday knows his place."
Yeah, that's probably the right call for the 50-year-old, who hasn't stepped foot on a football field in 13 years.
The good news is, unlike at quarterback, the Colts are in good shape at center with Tanor Bortolini, who was one year and 10 months old when his new quarterback was drafted into the NFL.
Rivers is the last-ditch effort for the Colts to save their season in the wake of the Daniel Jones injury, which will end his season.
Before signing Rivers, the Colts were faced with the prospect of starting rookie Riley Leonard or journeyman practice squad quarterback Brett Rypien.
We have no clue what Rivers has left in the tank at this point in his life — although reports suggest he looked good in his workout — but we can say with a fair bit of certainty he's still probably better than the Colts' other options.
