Colts' Anthony Richardson decision is latest failure to recover from Andrew Luck image

This upcoming Sunday will mark the six-year anniversary.

Andrew Luck announced his retirement from the NFL in entirely shocking fashion on August 24, 2019. The Indianapolis Colts still haven't recovered.

The latest sad tale in the saga came Tuesday, when ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the news that Daniel Jones will start the Colts' season opener on Sept. 7 against the Dolphins.

That's nothing against Jones, who is trying to revitalize his career after some flashes with the Giants but no real consistency.

This, right now, is about Anthony Richardson.

The Colts took him No. 4 overall out of Florida in 2023 to be the savior.

Instead, he hasn't stayed healthy, and when he's been on the field, he's been the most inaccurate passer in the league.

Richardson is the only QB since Luck retired to start games in multiple seasons for the Colts.

The list of one-year (or less) wonders includes Jacoby Brissett, Brian Hoyer, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew and Joe Flacco.

The Colts are 48-51 since Luck retired, with just a single first-round playoff loss mixed in.

Maybe the Colts still turn to Richardson later in the 2025 season and he shows that he can get the job done.

But in reality, the choice to pass him by for Week 1 in favor of Jones is likely the final indictment of that draft selection.

At this point, it'd be a surprise if the Colts didn't take a talented QB in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

And this time, they'll be hoping that, unlike Richardson, the new guy can actually bring about a positive era of football in Indianapolis for the first time since those early days of August in 2019, before the Colts' football world flipped on its head.
