Despite doing so each of the past two seasons, the Indianapolis Colts are no longer running Anthony Richardson Sr. out as their starting quarterback, an indication that his future with the organization is not at all secure.
Given the uncertainty, Deiric Jackson, Richardson’s agent, recently met with Colts general manager Chris Ballard to discuss where the two sides go from here, according to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler reported the talks were “constructive” and provided an opportunity for both sides to “let feelings be known.” A trade was discussed, though Jackson never made an official request. Ballard remained firm that he has no intentions of moving on from Richardson.
Jackson had publicly questioned whether or not the trust between Richardson and the Colts was still intact following their decision to start Daniel Jones over his client. After being promised patience with his development, the Colts rushed Richardson into action and have since benched him on two separate occasions.
But Richardson isn’t making any unnecessary noise, according to Fowler.
“Richardson isn't making any waves -- he will remain professional, backing up Jones and maintaining his readiness,” Fowler wrote. “He also worked on improving his regimen, leadership, mechanics, diet and ability to layer short-to-intermediate throws, resulting in improvement in camp.”
Richardson still has a chance to play this season. In his six NFL seasons, Jones has yet to play a complete regular campaign without missing time due to injury. So the door is still open for Richardson to make a resurgence and reestablish himself as the franchise cornerstone the Colts drafted him to be.
