The Indianapolis Colts added some depth to the backfield in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Even though the Colts still have Jonathan Taylor under contract, they entered the offseason with an underrated need to address the backup running back role.
After addressing other positions earlier in the draft, the Colts wound up taking Kansas State running back DJ Giddens with the No. 151 overall pick.
Taylor is the unquestioned leader on the depth chart, but Giddens is an intriguing pick and a player who could very well begin the season as the backup to Taylor.
A two-year starter at Kansas State, Giddens was extremely productive during his collegiate career. He posted 517 carries for 3,087 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns in 39 games (25 starts). He also added 58 receptions for 679 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.
Here's what Dane Brugler of The Athletic said about Giddens in his draft guide:
"Overall, Giddens is a narrow, upright runner and doesn't have a grind-it-out mentality, but his gliding quickness and innate balance help him create. He projects best in an NFL scheme with a play caller who
can get him into space as part of a committee."
The Colts still need to add some depth to the interior offensive line, but Giddens could have an impact as a change-of-pace back and potential spot starter if Taylor misses time.
