Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said on Monday that the trade of veteran offensive tackle Cam Robinson to the Cleveland Browns was made to give the lineman an opportunity to get on the field more often.
"Cam wants to play," Ryans told reporters. "So, it gives him an opportunity to do that. We wish Cam nothing but the best. He has done everything in the right way. So, we wanted to do right by him and give him the opportunity."
Robinson was dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a 2027 late-round draft pick, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Rookie Aireontae Ersery has secured the starting role on the left side, creating a longer path for Robinson to see playing time. Ryans praised the development of Ersery, a second-round pick from Minnesota who has impressed early.
"Ersery has got a really good job," Ryans said. "Still has ways to go. Still has room to grow. The trade was separate from each other. It has nothing to do with Cam."
Reports indicated that Robinson preferred to play left tackle in Houston but struggled to secure that opportunity.
Insider Jordan Schultz noted that the veteran never received a consistent chance at the position with the Texans, who instead leaned toward a younger option. With Cleveland facing a void at left tackle, the Browns made the move to acquire Robinson, a "respected veteran."
