The New York Giants shook things up by relieving head coach Brian Daboll of his duties following a 2-8 start to the season. It was a move that was probably overdue, as things simply weren't working in New York for Daboll. Now, the former Coach of the Year will be looking for a new home, and the Houston Texans were recently listed as a potential landing spot by Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report.
Rapp suggests that the Texans could look to add Daboll as an offensive coordinator due to the fact that Houston’s offense has been underwhelming this season under new O.C. Nick Caley, who took over for Bobby Slowik after the ’24 season. So far this season, the Texans are 23rd league-wide in total points scored (204) and 17th in total yards gained (2,981).
Daboll has ample experience as an offensive coordinator, as he has previously held that role with several NFL teams including the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
From Bleacher Report:
“Could the Texans go with a third offensive coordinator in as many seasons next year? It's certainly possible, and Daboll's experience coaching a number of young quarterbacks throughout his career could potentially be beneficial to Stroud. If Houston's season ends in disappointment and Caley is canned, Daboll is a name to monitor.”
Daboll’s days as a head coach in the league are likely numbered, at least for now. He’ll likely need to serve as successful stint as a coordinator somewhere before potentially being considered for a head coaching role again.
It remains to be seen if the Texans would actually want to have a different offensive coordinator for a third straight season, as such as lack of continuity wouldn’t be ideal. But, if the offense continues to struggle throughout the rest of the current campaign, perhaps they could look to make a change, again.
