Why Romeo Doubs' helmet is bigger than everyone else's for Packers image

TL;DR

  • Romeo Doubs wears a Guardian Cap, a protective shell over his helmet, not a larger helmet.
  • Guardian Caps are designed to help prevent head injuries and were first allowed in NFL games in 2024.
  • Doubs began using the Guardian Cap after a concussion and has worn it since.
  • Rookie Savion Williams also wears a Guardian Cap for the Green Bay Packers.

Romeo Doubs is set to play on Thanksgiving Day sporting a larger helmet than anyone else on the field.

Well, sort of.

The Green Bay Packers' wide receiver does have, optically, a bigger helmet.

But it's not exactly what it appears.

Romeo Doubs' helmet appears larger than others for what reason?

Romeo Doubs doesn't actually have a bigger helmet.

Instead, he's got a cover over his standard helmet.

It's called a Guardian Cap.

A Guardian Cap is a soft, protective, shell covering that goes over the regulation NFL helmet.

It is designed to help prevent head injuries.

Guardian Caps were first allowed to be worn on NFL practice fields in 2020.

The first time players could wear Guardian Caps in games was 2024.

Late in the 2024 season, Doubs started using a Guardian Cap. He was sidelined for two weeks due to a concussion he suffered against the San Francisco 49ers.

In his first game with the Guardian Cap, he had two receiving touchdowns.

Doubs has continued to wear the helmet covering for the entire 2025 season.

His teammate, rookie Savion Williams, also wears a Guardian Cap.
