Why Packers cut kicker Lucas Havrisik to let Brandon McManus keep kicking image

TL;DR

  • Green Bay Packers released Lucas Havrisik, keeping Brandon McManus as sole kicker.
  • Havrisik was perfect on field goals and extra points, including a 61-yarder.
  • McManus has missed three of his last seven field goal attempts.
  • Packers sought McManus and hope he recovers from a leg injury.

The Green Bay Packers have bounced back and forth at kicker this season.

Brandon McManus has gotten time. So too has Lucas Havrisik.

This role often goes unnoticed until it becomes crucial. When the Green Bay Packers face the Detroit Lions this Thanksgiving, it will indeed be critical.

This could lead to questions about the Packers' decision this week to release Havrisik and retain McManus as their sole kicker.

The Packers released Lucas Havrisik and opted to retain Brandon McManus.

In the end, Green Bay chose to stick with the veteran who entered the year as their kicker.,

There was a case to be made in the other direction.

This year, Havrisik has successfully kicked all four of his field goal attempts and all six of his extra point attempts. He also successfully made a 61-yard field goal.

McManus has missed three of his last seven field goal attempts.

The Packers specifically sought out McManus, though, and so they've decided not to get rid of him.

Green Bay is probably hoping McManus will be healthy again after he missed time due to a leg injury.

Should the Packers falter on a kick, inquiries will undoubtedly arise concerning why Havrisik wasn't retained.
