The Green Bay Packers will have to find a new backup quarterback this offseason with Malik Willis almost certainly set to depart in 2026.
Willis has impressed over his two seasons as Jordan Love's backup when he has gotten some opportunities, and now the expectation is Willis is going to land a starting job somewhere in free agency.
On Tuesday, the Packers added former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kyle McCord by signing him to a futures deal and he'll now have an opportunity to compete for the backup job during the offseason.
McCord was a former sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025 but did not make the 53-man roster before being brought back on the practice squad.
McCord did get some action in the preseason and completed 42.9% of his passes for 191 yards and one touchdown to two picks.
While he will have a chance to land a roster spot, the deck will be stacked against the 23-year-old actually landing the backup job, as the Packers will be looking for someone who can provide a more sure thing behind Love.
But as we saw with Willis, whose career looked to be over after his failed stint with the Titans, never say never in the NFL and with quarterbacks in Green Bay.
As for Willis, there is a growing belief (this is just speculation, though) that he'll land with the Miami Dolphins.
That's because Miami hired former Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager and former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their next head coach.
Adding to that, Miami has a giant hole at quarterback going into 2026, so that only adds to the reason why so many believe Willis could be headed to South Beach.
