Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is drawing a ton of interest around the NFL.
According to reports, McDaniel has interviewed for four head-coaching vacancies, with McDaniel meeting with the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns.
But McDaniel is also drawing interest for offensive coordinator openings, with the Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers among his options. Another report suggests he's going to be a top candidate for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well.
While the expectation is McDaniel would easily take a head-coach opening rather than an offensive coordinator job, it turns out that might not be the case.
According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, McDaniel would take a top-flight offensive coordinator job over a less-than-desirable head-coach opening.
"Former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel will interview for the Bucs’ OC job Friday. He would consider a great OC opportunity better than a not-great head coaching vacancy," Auman reported.
This is obviously great news for the Lions, Eagles and Bucs, all of whom have attractive offensive coordinator openings for McDaniel to consider.
The Lions have had one of the elite offenses in the NFL for years now, and when at their best, the Eagles' and Bucs' units can be elite.
As far as the four teams who have interviewed McDaniel for their head-coaching vacancies are concerned, the Browns are by far the least attractive given their uncertainty at quarterback, and on offense in general.
The Falcons and Ravens are borderline playoff teams with several attractive pieces, and the Titans have a promising young quarterback in Cam Ward and a boatload of cap space and a high draft pick to bring in more help.
We believe McDaniel would take the head-coach job in Atlanta, Tennessee or Baltimore over an offensive coordinator job.
However, if it's between Cleveland and calling plays for the Lions, Eagles or Bucs, we think that, based on Auman's report, he would choose being an offensive coordinator over being the Browns head coach.
