The Detroit Lions will finish off what has been a terribly disappointing season in Week 18.
The Lions entered the 2025 campaign with Super Bowl aspirations after a 15-win season, but they fell very short of that and instead Detroit has missed the playoffs and is now in line to finish in last place in the NFC North with a loss or a Minnesota Vikings victory in Week 18.
As a result, there is plenty of finger-pointing going on, and some fans are hoping for a change at quarterback with Jared Goff.
However, Lions head coach Dan Campbell made it very clear on Tuesday that Goff isn't going anywhere.
"Campbell also said Jared Goff isn't going anywhere and called him a stud," Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman relayed from Campbell's Tuesday spot on 97.1 The Ticket.
As frustrating as the Lions' season has been, Goff has hardly been the biggest issue.
Despite lackluster offensive line play, Goff has completed 68.3% of his passes and has thrown for 4,233 yards and 33 touchdowns to seven picks, which amount to strong numbers for the veteran signal-caller.
Even if the Lions wanted to move off Goff, doing so would be extremely difficult because of his contract.
Trading or cutting Goff would incur a massive dead-cap hit, even with a post-June 1 designation. Of course, those dead-cap hits are lower in 2027 and 2028 but are still substantial, so there's no easy out with him moving forward.
What the Lions could do is use one of their draft picks on a quarterback and have him sit behind Goff for a few years in order to start planning for the future.
But the Lions have seven picks in next year's draft when you include the projected compensatory pick, and they are missing selections in the third and fifth rounds.
Detroit has some position groups to replenish with those picks as it looks to get back to playoff contention in 2026, so using one on a player who may not help them for a few years, if ever, doesn't seem likely.
Whatever the case may be, don't expect any change at quarterback for the foreseeable future.
