Long accustomed to sitting atop the standings, Bill Belichick is backing the top seeds once again.

Widely regarded as the greatest coach in football history, Belichick won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots and two more as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. He is now coaching college football at North Carolina.

During an appearance with Jim Gray on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go” podcast, Belichick said he views the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks as the teams to beat in the NFL playoffs.

“When you look at Denver and Seattle, those are two good football teams that are very well balanced,” Belichick told Gray. “Denver's been incredible with the number of close games they've won, but they're both very good defensive teams, which is I think always an advantage when you play in the playoffs and play at home, and play outside. … When I say 'all' that's a lot easier said than done, but all Denver and Seattle have to do are win two games at home and they're in the Super Bowl. And that's doable with a week off. So I think they're definitely the two teams to beat.”

Both the Broncos (14-3) and Seahawks (14-3) earned first-round byes after locking up the No. 1 seeds in the AFC and NFC, respectively. They are set to find out their divisional-round opponents this week.

Never far from controversy, Belichick ultimately landed at North Carolina, where his first season ended with a 4-8 record.

The Tar Heels have since made waves in the transfer portal, and Belichick, 73, continues to be mentioned as a potential candidate for future NFL head coaching vacancies.
