Did the Denver Broncos just deliver the final blow to the Chiefs dynasty?

Did the Denver Broncos just deliver the final blow to the Chiefs dynasty? image

The Denver Broncos got what many can argue was their biggest win since Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 22-19 on a walk-off field goal from Wil Lutz. That was what many Broncos fans felt should have happened at Arrowhead Stadium last year and the Broncos got a huge taste of revenge with this one.

But they have done much more than that. Did they also finish off the Chiefs dynasty, at least for the time being?

That may seem like a wild statement, but the Chiefs have won the AFC West title nine years in a row while representing the AFC in five of the last six Super Bowls. With this loss, they sit at.500, 5-5 on the season. If the season ended today, the Chiefs wouldn't even be in the playoffs.

As long as they have Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, they are always going to be a tough team to play, but they have certainly lost their edge. The Chiefs have not lost more than six games in a season since 2014 and with seven games still to go this season, they are almost at that number.

That said, the media will want to talk about what is wrong with the Chiefs at length this coming week, but this game was more about how far Denver has come than it was about how far the Chiefs have fallen. The Broncos are a better team than Kansas City right now with a better future trajectory.

This wasn't just a big win for the Broncos; it could easily signal a changing of the guard in the AFC West. Denver has played Kansas City tough, even when the Chiefs were going to all of those Super Bowls. But last year, the Broncos did everything to beat them on the road; they just failed to execute on the final play.

Sunday's win was not only about getting that one back, but also about the Broncos announcing themselves as the new king of the West while showing the world that the days of the Chiefs ruling over the entire conference are over.
