Broncos have clear X-factor that could decide key Week 15 matchup with NFC North-leading Packers image

Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims earned his third career AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award after a Week 14 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, highlighted by his first career punt return touchdown, a 48-yard score.

Despite limited production as a receiver, Mims continues to demonstrate why he is considered one of the league’s most valuable special teams contributors.

As Denver prepares for a pivotal Week 15 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, a team that matches up almost evenly with the Broncos on paper, Mims’ explosiveness as a returner could provide the edge Denver needs to overcome a tough NFC opponent.

Marvin Mims may hold the key to Denver’s Week 15 success

Head-to-head, the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers are similar teams, both featuring strong defenses paired with balanced offenses. Analysts have questioned whether their overall production has been limited by their offensive schemes, but both units have steadily improved in recent weeks heading into this matchup.

In what is expected to be a physical game, defensive stops will be frequent and that is where Broncos receiver and return specialist Marvin Mims could give Denver an edge. Mims currently ranks fourth in the league in punt return average, gaining 16.4 yards per attempt, and could be a key weapon for head coach Sean Payton.

Green Bay’s special teams, under coordinator Rich Bisaccia, have struggled this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in punt return yards allowed at 11.4 per attempt. The 2x All-Pro returner's ability to consistently put the Broncos in favorable field position could be crucial against a stubborn Packers defense.

Even simply helping Denver reach field goal range could make a difference in what is expected to be a low-scoring game. The Broncos’ kicker, Will Lutz, has been reliable this season, missing only two field goal attempts.

If Mims continues to produce explosive returns, he could be the difference-maker in a close game. By consistently putting Denver in favorable field position, he boosts the offense’s scoring opportunities and helps the Broncos control the pace against one of the league’s toughest defenses. In a matchup expected to hinge on field position and defensive stops, his contributions on special teams may ultimately tip the scales in Denver’s favor.
