The Denver Broncos' Super Bowl hopes were dealt a devastating blow after quarterback Bo Nix suffered a serious injury on Saturday.

Nix, who led the Broncos to a divisional-round win over the Buffalo Bills, suffered a broken bone in his ankle that will require surgery and end his season.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared the news following the victory, as well as what Nix said about his injury.

“I’ll tell you what, the one thing about it. He’s such a strong, faith-based guy. He was sitting in the hallway with his family, and I went over, and we’re all talking to him," Payton shared.

"He knows that God has a plan for him. He said he had one in high school, and then he said he had one at Auburn," Payton added. "I said, ‘I didn’t realize that.’ I said, ‘If I would have known that, I wouldn’t have drafted you.’ (Laughs) He’s a tough cookie. I said, ‘Listen. I believe you’re the second quarterback in Year 2 to take your team to a Championship game, and the first is [Chiefs QB Patrick] Mahomes. This team all year has lost key players, and we’ll rise up for the next challenge and we’ll go from there.”

With Nix out, the Broncos will turn to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham to start in the AFC Championship Game, Payton said, and Sam Ehlinger will be QB2.

Who Stidham will be playing has yet to be determined, though, as the Broncos are waiting for the winner of the Sunday game between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.

If it's the Patriots, Jarrett Stidham will have a revenge game on his hands, as the Pats drafted Stidham in 2019. Stidham played in eight games (zero starts) for the Patriots over two seasons.
