Broncos bring in recently fired Lions coach before Bills' playoff game image

The Denver Broncos got a first-round bye after finishing as the AFC's number 1 seed, and now in the Divisional round, will face the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen.

This won't be an easy matchup, and with the playoff loss from a year ago still lingering, this game is a big one for the Broncos. And they're getting all of the help they can.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Broncos have brought in recently fired Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton as a consultant for this week's matchup against the Bills.

Broncos bring in ex-Lions OC to consult offense

"Former Lions offensive coordinator John Morton, who worked with Sean Payton in New Orleans and in Denver, joined the Broncos this week as a consultant for the postseason, per sources," Schefter reports.

Morton was previously with the Broncos and the New Orleans Saints as part of Payton's coaching staff. And now, after being fired from the Lions coordinator job, he's coming back to Payton to help them prepare for the playoffs.

Morton's Lions didn't get to face the Bills' defense this season, so he won't be able to provide much insight into how they play. But he's an experienced coach, and could help the Broncos get some extra perspective in the playoffs.

This isn't an uncommon occurrence, as recently fired coaches will often join a contender as a consultant, and Morton is doing so with Payton, someone he's worked with before.

The Broncos offense will need to come out firing against the Bills, especially on the ground against a weak Bills run defense. With Morton's experience with the Lions running back duo, he has an idea for how much a supertsra running back can change the game.

This weekend against the Bills, RJ Harvey will need to have a big game, and Morton's consultation might help in getting such a big week out of Harvey and the running back room.
