Why ESPN's potential free agent move for Cowboys' George Pickens makes zero sense image

Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens has been in the news this week for his less-than-ideal performance against the Detroit Lions.

And now, we are hearing some things about the offseason, with Pickens' future reportedly a little in doubt. Playing on the final year of his rookie deal, Pickens is looking for a big payday, and the Cowboys, as we know, aren't too willing to part ways with top-of-the-market money for players.

Now comes ESPN's Jeremy Fowler with what he's heard around the league with a realistic move that could happen in the offseason, and Fowler has named George as a possible candidate for the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.

"George Pickens would be a significant upgrade in Baltimore," Fowler wrote. "Pickens might be franchise-tagged by Dallas. But if available, the Ravens could use some of their $40 million in 2026 cap space on Pickens, knowing John Harbaugh is good at managing big personalities."

Why Pickens' potential move makes zero sense

There are several holes in any potential Pickens move.

Firstly, we have heard George himself express a certain desire to stay in Dallas, plus Dak Prescott and Brian Schottenheimer have made it known of their desire to keep Pickens around beyond 2025.

Jerry Jones stated earlier this week on 105.3 The Fan that Pickens' effort in Detroit isn't a concern to him, so that's good, given he's the one who signs the big deals with his star players.

Plus, the most realistic move for George this offseason is that he is franchise tagged at $28 million APY, and the Cowboys continue to work on a long-term deal for him in 2026.

After what Pickens has done with Dak and Schottenheimer this season, not to mention the connection with CeeDee Lamb, a move away from The Star seems way off in the distance for George.

That's not to say it won't happen, but right now, Pickens not being a Cowboy in 2026 is very unlikely indeed.
