No one can question Jerry Jones’ dedication to his football team. The guy lives and breathes Dallas Cowboys football. So, his goal in life should come as no surprise.

During an end-of-season news conference, Jones revealed that his aim is to be the most successful NFL owner ever, though at 83 years old, he knows that he still has a way to go to accomplish that goal.

"My goal in life is to retire as the owner that won the most Super Bowls," Jones said. "That's my goal. To be retired in the NFL as the owner that won the most super bowls.

“We've got three. How many more do I have to go as a single owner? [New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft] has got how many? Six? So, I got work to do. Got work to do. But at least I'm up to the second rung in the ladder."

It’s been over 30 years since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl, so it’s difficult to imagine them winning one, let alone three, in the near future. Plus, the Cowboys have now missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons, so it’s not like they’re especially close to championship status.

But, you can’t blame Jones for having goals, no matter how lofty or unrealistic they are. The ironic thing is Jones’ over-dedication to his team could be directly correlated with Dallas’ lack of success over the past three decades.

If Jones took a step back from a football operations perspective and simply hired qualified people to run the team, things might be different. But, Jones’ hands-on approach to roster building and team management has proven ineffective.

At this point, Jones is unlikely to alter his approach to running the Cowboys, but he’s also unlikely to reach his ultimate goal.
