Well, the Dallas Cowboys lost the first game of the season on Thursday night to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jones impressed with coach’s debut
The Cowboys opened the 2025 season under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, falling just short in a 24-20 loss to the Eagles on opening night. While the scoreboard didn’t tilt in Dallas’ favor, owner Jerry Jones wasn’t discouraged.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Jones praised Schottenheimer’s preparation and first game in charge. “I thought he gave us a chance to win that game,” Jones said. “That’s what we ask for, be in it at the end. I thought he did a great job.”
Offense started hot, cooled late
Dallas jumped ahead 14-7 in the second quarter and scored on its first four possessions, putting up two touchdowns and two field goals. But after halftime, the offense went flat, failing to score on its final four drives. That opened the door for Philadelphia to steal a tight divisional matchup.

Even so, Jones highlighted Schottenheimer’s play-calling, a responsibility he didn’t have under Mike McCarthy. “I thought he handled that really well. No surprise that he handled it,” Jones said.
What’s next for Dallas
It wasn’t the debut Schottenheimer would have scripted, but the Cowboys showed enough to keep their owner encouraged. With Dak Prescott under center and a new voice on the headset, Dallas will look to build on a competitive Week 1 performance and avoid falling into an early-season hole.
