The Dallas Cowboys, through seven weeks, are perhaps one of the toughest teams to get a read on with Brian Schottenheimer at the helm for the first time as a head coach.

The offense is one of the best in football, and the defense is one of the worst (there have been glimpses of positivity), which makes it hard to get a proper feel for who they are.

The Cowboys can beat anyone due to their offense, but can lose to anyone because of their defense, so it can be hard to decide how you feel about Dallas.

For CBS Sports' Pete Prisco, despite the elite offense, the Cowboys are all the way down at No. 18 in his latest power rankings.

"The offense is explosive and will be fun to watch all season," Prisco writes. "If the defense gets better, watch out for this group as a potential playoff team."

Do Cowboys deserve to be higher?

You could make the case that Dallas should be ahead of the Atlanta Falcons (17),  the Minnesota Vikings (16), and even the Los Angeles Chargers (15), but the defense is likely the reason why Dallas finds itself where it does.

Offensively, the Cowboys could be top five without hesitation, but this is a team game, and the defense hasn't pulled its weight often enough.

Are the Cowboys a "mid" team? Their record (3-3-1) says they are, and for all the good the offense has done, right now, there isn't anything to show for it. The only hope is that Matt Eberflus' defense improves enough to the point where they don't get obliterated through the air or on the ground as they did early in the season.

But at No. 18?  Yeah, you can feel a little hard done by, Cowboys.
