Mediocrity took hold in the Cowboys' locker room throughout the 2024 season. In the end, it cost longtime head coach Mike McCarthy his job.

Dallas endured a sour campaign last season, limping to a 7-10 record as Dak Prescott's season came to a premature end due to injury. There were extenuating circumstances, for sure, but the Cowboys' inability to mount a serious challenge on the NFL's elite has many wondering just what the future holds in JerryWorld, particularly as the Eagles and Commanders bolster their youthful rosters.

Prescott is set to return from triage, while CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons all rank as some of the best players at their respective positions in football. Still, uncertainty abounds at AT&T Stadium. A strong 2025 NFL Draft could help change that.

The Sporting News tracked each of the Cowboys' 2025 NFL Draft selections, from the first pick through the seventh round.

Cowboys NFL Draft needs

  • Running back: When Dallas has been at its best over the years, it has featured an explosive rushing attack. The lineage of standout Cowboys runners is well-established, with Tony Dorsett, Emmitt Smith, and Ezekiel Elliott all finding a plot of space within the franchise's running back lore. They could use another in 2024, as the Cowboys only tallied 1,705 rushing yards during the regular season, the sixth-worst mark in football last season.
  • Wide receiver: CeeDee Lamb is great, but the Cowboys could use a little more juice in the pass-catching department. Outside of Jalen Tolbert, no other Dallas receiver hit the 500-yard plateau. With a handful of talented receivers available for selection on Day 2 and Day 3, expect some reinforcements to come through the door sooner rather than later.
  • Cornerback: The Cowboys were fairly middle of the road as far pass defenses were concerned in 2024, giving up the 16th-most passing yards in football. They fared a little worse when it came to preventing aerial scores, as Dallas conceded 28 passing touchdowns in 2024, the joint-eighth highest total in the league. We're expecting Dallas to bolster its secondary, particularly after injuries limited former All-Pro ballhawks DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs.
