The Dallas Cowboys' trade of Micah Parsons has proven to be as devastating to the team's defense as we all expected.
Through four games, the Cowboys have given up the second-most points per game in the NFL (33.0) and Dallas has just five sacks, a total only three other teams in the league have failed to reach.
If the Cowboys want to improve their defense moving forward, they should be seeking out a trade that helps their pass-rush.
Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame has just the solution. He proposes a deadline deal between the Cowboys and Miami Dolphins that would send veteran edge rusher Bradley Chubb to Dallas.
- Cowboys get: Bradley Chubb
- Dolphins get: Conditional fifth-round pick
Here's what Verderame said about the proposed deal.
The Cowboys’ offense has been good enough to keep this team competitive despite the horrendous defensive performances. Next to tying the Packers, it would be a monumental achievement for team owner Jerry Jones if his team advances to the postseason months after trading Micah Parsons to Green Bay.
Making the playoffs is unlikely without the defense showing some improvement. The Cowboys desperately need pass-rushing help, and the Dolphins have a surplus at the position. Chubb, 29, is in the midst of an impressive comeback season after overcoming multiple significant injuries. He might never regain his top form, but with three sacks this season, it’s clear that he remains a quality pass rusher.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Chubb has battled injuries throughout his career. However, when healthy, he has proven to be a difference-maker. Chubb has tallied 7.5 or more sacks four times and is coming off a season in which he had 11 in 16 games.
In 2025, Chubb is off to a strong start with three sacks, and that's half of a sack more than Parsons has and two less sacks than Dallas has as a team.
Safe to say, Chubb would be a sizeable upgrade.
The Dolphins trading Chubb is realistic. The veteran will turn 30 next year and is unlikely to be in the team's future plans if it decides to rebuild following what is expected to be another poor year for Miami after a 1-3 start.
The biggest hurdle for Dallas will be the money, as Chubb is on the books for cap hits of $31 million over the next two seasons. Any team that tries to acquire Chubb will definitely be looking for Miami to pick up some money.
For the Cowboys to make this trade, they have to believe they've got a chance to at least contend for a playoff spot. Right now, things don't look great on that front, but the Cowboys will have until next month to figure out if they should be buyers.
