Cowboys could cut ties with $97 million All-Pro after draft decision image

The Dallas Cowboys made some key additions to their team through the NFL Draft. However, one of their moves could point to them moving on from one of their star players.

The Cowboys drafted highly regarded cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. in the third round of the NFL Draft. Revel could have been drafted higher had it not been for a torn ACL. However, USA Today's Nate Davis noted that his selection could mean Trevon Diggs is on thin ice.

"He’s missed 21 games over the past two seasons and has long had a reputation for making big plays … but also surrendering them," wrote Davis. "Diggs has four years remaining on a $97 million extension with no guarantees beyond 2025. And with highly capable CB Shavon Revel Jr. arriving in the third round – a torn ACL last year cost him a much earlier draft call – and the Cowboys about to issue another mega contract to DE Micah Parsons … well, worth wondering how much longer they can afford Diggs and/or fellow CB DaRon Bland, who could be a free agent next year."

Diggs' future may have already been in question before the draft. He played in just 11 games last season, once again dealing with injuries.  He has just six interceptions since his 11-interception campaign in 2021. To be fair, he is getting thrown at less after establishing himself as a No.1 corner for the Cowboys.

Diggs' contract is the biggest factor in his fate with the Cowboys. The team is about to commit persumab,y a record-breaking amount of money to Micah Parsons. They may not be able to justify dedicating so much of the salary cap to Diggs.

If Revel can show he is a capable starter, the Cowboys could be comfortable moving on from Diggs and taking a more cost effective approach in the secondary.
