The Dallas Cowboys have now cut ties with a second defensive star this season. This time, it’s through waivers.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys have released the star cornerback Trevon Diggs. NFL teams will have an opportunity to claim him in the coming days.

What’s the Cost of Claiming Diggs?

With one week left in the NFL season, Diggs would be owed a $472,000 payday for Week 18. If active, he would earn an additional $58,823, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

In 2023, the Cowboys took a massive gamble on signing Diggs to a five-year extension. The contract totaled $97 million, and it’s safe to say he hasn’t lived up to the investment.

Injuries have affected the defensive star throughout that stretch. Diggs appeared in just two games in 2023, 11 games in 2024, and eight games this season.

Over the summer, it was clear that Diggs and the Cowboys had a relationship that was going south. When Diggs decided to rehab away from the Cowboys before training camp, it came at a financial cost. From that point on, Diggs made his frustration clear.

Is Trevon Diggs Worth a Pickup?

The Cowboys aren’t going anywhere this season. When they wrap up Week 18, they’ll pack their bags and miss the playoffs.

Diggs is in a position where a contender could come calling.

In eight games this year, Diggs has registered 25 tackles, with one of them going for a loss. It’s the first season of his NFL career without an interception.

Diggs is a long way from the player he was in 2021-2022. Two years before his big deal, Diggs led the NFL with 11 touchdowns and two pick-sixes. In the following year, he had three interceptions, but made his second-straight Pro Bowl bid.

If Diggs goes unclaimed, a team in need of secondary depth could use him. He might not be the same ballhawk he was before he earned a near-$100 million payday, but he could be useful for a team in the postseason.
