The Dillon Gabriel experiment is not going according to plan and that has left many to wonder if the Cleveland Browns will turn to Shedeur Sanders soon.
Gabriel is now five starts deep into his NFL career and the early returns have not been good. The Browns are 1-4 in that span and Gabriel has completed just 58.6% of his passes for 869 yards and seven touchdowns to two picks overall this season.
Over his five starts, the Browns' offense has scored just 18 points per game, and even that mark is padded by a 31-point performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7.
Following Sunday's loss to the New York Jets, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed he would be sticking with Gabriel.
“We’re going to stick with Dillon (Gabriel),” Stefanski told reporters, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi.
On Monday, Stefanski was asked about a possible timeline for Sanders to get a crack at the starting job, but the Browns head coach once again reiterated his commitment to Gabriel, who was drafted two rounds earlier than Sanders.
"I don't think it's fair to speculate. We're committed to getting better as an offense. Dillon (Gabriel) is certainly committing to improving every which way he can," Stefanski said.
Sanders had been dealing with a back injury in recent weeks, but he was removed from the injury report before the Week 10 game, so he's fully healthy now.
There is absolutely no guarantee that Sanders will be better than Gabriel, but the Browns need to find out at some point before they enter an offseason in which they might draft another quarterback with what will be a high first-round pick.
If Sanders shows he can be the guy, that would be huge, as the Browns can utilize their first-round pick on a different position.
