Shedeur Sanders’ NFL debut feels inevitable after another Browns loss image

Shedeur Sanders’ name is growing louder in Cleveland after another disappointing week for the Browns.

The former Colorado Buffaloes standout, fully recovered from a back injury, has spent the season as the team’s backup quarterback—a surprising spot for the 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

With the Browns sitting at 2-7 and the offense continuing to sputter under Dillon Gabriel, frustration across the fan base is reaching a boiling point.

Skip Bayless voiced what many fans have been saying, writing on X,

“How much longer do I have to watch Dillon Gabriel dink and dunk and clunk... And lose, even to the Jets... Before Shedeur gets his turn???”

Cleveland.com’s Ashley Bastock echoed those sentiments, noting that fans’ anticipation to see Sanders is justified given the lack of excitement surrounding the team.

Sanders, who once led college football with a 74 percent completion rate and captured the Johnny Unitas Award, slid to the fifth round of the draft and has yet to play a regular-season snap. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Criticized the organization, saying,

“You had Baker (Mayfield). Dillon Gabriel was Stefanski’s guy... I had Shedeur, the No. 1 QB on my board last year. What happened? Nothing happened… they don’t want him.”

Browns’ continued struggles raise questions about quarterback direction

Cleveland’s coaching staff appears set on sticking with Gabriel despite mounting losses. Against the New York Jets, he threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, avoiding major errors but again failing to secure a win. The defeat dropped the Browns to 2-7, with Gabriel now 1-4 as a starter.

Through five starts, he has completed 59.9 percent of his passes for 702 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions while rushing for just 30 yards.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed to reporters that Gabriel will remain the starter heading into Week 11 against the 4-5 Baltimore Ravens, according to NFL insider Josina Anderson.

That decision has only intensified debate among fans and analysts who believe Sanders could provide the spark the team desperately needs.

Unless Gabriel suddenly finds consistency, pressure will continue to mount on Stefanski, whose future could hinge on the team’s offensive turnaround.

For now, Cleveland remains hesitant to turn the page, but with morale sinking and losses piling up, Sanders’ long-awaited debut is starting to feel less like a question of if—and more like when.
