The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation has been anything but stable this season, and now there’s growing buzz that rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders could see the field sooner rather than later.
According to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, the team has been impressed by Sanders’ progress behind the scenes, signaling that his debut might not be far away.
After trading veteran Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals and elevating Sanders to the No. 2 spot behind rookie starter Dillon Gabriel, the Browns appear to be preparing for a possible transition under center.
While Cleveland continues to give Gabriel time to develop, Cabot’s latest update suggests that the coaching staff’s confidence in Sanders is increasing as the season moves forward.
Insider details Browns’ growing confidence in Shedeur Sanders
Cleveland’s quarterback carousel has taken several turns since the start of the 2025 NFL season. The Browns began the year with Joe Flacco, who was quickly benched and later traded to a divisional rival.
That move opened the door for Dillon Gabriel to start, though his performance has been uneven through two starts. With Gabriel still adjusting to the speed of the NFL, Sanders has quietly climbed the depth chart and could soon challenge for playing time.
Cabot of Cleveland.com provided a detailed update on Sanders’ development, writing that the rookie has been,
“working on every aspect of his game, from throwing out of the shotgun and under center, to play-action, to his footwork and everything else to be prepared to play when his number is called. He’s also worked on RPOs, keepers, and other QB movement skills because those are a big part of the Browns offense.”
Teammates have taken notice as well. Defensive star Myles Garrett shared that he often sees Sanders working with head coach Kevin Stefanski early in the morning, noting the young quarterback’s commitment to improvement.
“It’s showing up on the practice field, and the Browns are eager to see what he can do this season when the time comes,” Cabot added.
While Cleveland remains committed to giving Gabriel “a decent on-ramp,” Cabot believes the team “will probably come a time in the second half of the season where the Browns will want to see Sanders play. They’re confident he’ll be ready.”
Sanders, once projected as a first-round pick, slipped to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft but continues to draw attention for his strong arm and leadership.
Fans have been calling for him to take the field, and if Cabot’s insight proves accurate, his opportunity to lead the Browns offense could arrive before the season’s end.
