The Shedeur Sanders situation in Cleveland has blown up big time over the weekend after Sanders' poor play in the last pre-season game of the year.
The internet blew up with many saying the Browns sabotage the young quarterback by not surrounding him with the first and second teamers.
For context, it’s been known for a while that Sanders was never going to start over Joe Flacco, who will play this whole season for the Browns.
Even if Flacco were to be hurt, Sanders is probably the last quarterback on the Browns depth chart to start.
ESPN’s Ryan Clark tried to explain the Brown’s decision on “Get Up” Monday morning.
“What it is that they’re doing is they’re treating Shedeur Sanders like a fifth-round pick. We’re not covering every fifth-round pick in the NFL, hoping that he gets the opportunity to be the starter on Day 1. We felt like, oh my goodness, they got a diamond in the rough. Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round. They felt like they evaluated him there, and that’s where they picked him. They’re playing the guy that they picked in the third round over him because they evaluate him at a higher level than what they do Shedeur Sanders,” Clark said.
He added, “I get it. We want to say all the reasons why what’s happening to him isn’t right. But maybe we weren’t right on how the entire NFL viewed him, but now how the Cleveland Browns view him as well.”
But the anger and calls of racism could be heard from Sanders fans across the social media spectrum, but some are saying that he is becoming a distraction to the team.
In fact, one New York sports talk show host compares Sanders to another famous backup, Tim Tebow. Tebow was a backup with the New York Jets, and with him came a lot of distractions.
"We saw what happened with Tim Tebow. That is the kind of thing that can fracture franchises, said EJ Stewart of WFAN and The Maggie and Perloff Show.
Stewart also said the Browns are “dummies” for not seeing this coming. Tebow didn’t fracture the Jets, but the Browns will have to ask themselves if having Shedeur Sanders on their team is worth the anguish.
