TL;DR
- Myles Garrett had four sacks against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
- Garrett was overlooked for AFC Defensive Player of the Week by Dolphins LB Jordyn Brooks.
- Brooks also won the award in Week 8 when Garrett had five sacks.
- Players on losing teams are typically ineligible for weekly NFL awards.
The Cleveland Browns haven't had much to cheer for on offense this season, but the defense, led by Myles Garrett, has been incredible. There's a lot of promise with that unit, and Garrett is proving to be an elite player once again.
Garrett recorded four sacks of Lamar Jackson in Week 11 versus the Baltimore Ravens, and despite the Browns' eventual loss, his performance stood out as one of the season's finest.
Despite Garrett's four sacks, he did not secure the AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award. As Andrew Siciliano of Inside Coverage pointed out, this isn't the first instance of Garret being overlooked for this honor, and remarkably, it's been against the same Miami Dolphins player on both occasions.
Myles Garrett overlooked by Dolphins linebacker for AFC Defensive Player of the Week honor for a second instance
"Myles Garrett is passed over by Dolphins LB Jordyn Brooks for AFC Defensive Player of the Week AGAIN." Siciliano writes. "Brooks won this week despite Garrett's 4 sacks. Brooks won in Week 8 when Garrett had 5 sacks."
Even though Garrett achieved impressive sack numbers in a single game, his team's defeat meant he didn't secure the award.
Garrett and other players on losing teams are unlikely to receive Player of the Week Awards, regardless of their performance, because only players from winning teams are eligible for these weekly NFL honors.
Garrett's prospects for an annual award are limited, even with his exceptional play, because he's on a team that doesn't often win.
At 2-8, the Browns have given their players only two chances to win a weekly award. And while Garrett won't win it every week, he was more than deserving of the award in Week 8 and Week 11.

What makes this snubbing of Garrett stick out all the more is that he was snubbed by the same Dolphins linebacker both times.
Brooks recorded an outstanding 20 tackles for The Dolphins during their victory, and despite his remarkable showing, Garrett's four sacks ought to have secured him Defensive Player of the Week honors.
While the NFL typically doesn't recognize players from losing teams, the unique situations involving Garrett in Weeks 8 and 11 warrant him receiving the award.
The reason Garrett's being overlooked is particularly striking because it's not the first instance where Brooks, a linebacker for The Dolphins (a team with a 4-7 record), has received the award even though Garrett, a Browns pass rusher, had achieved at least four sacks.
This is an odd coincidence, and it really emphasizes Garrett's excellent play and how these weekly NFL awards are exclusively given to players from victorious teams.
