Browns insider reveals original quarterback plan before training camp injury image

The Cleveland Browns sit at 1-5 on the season following their Week 6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Their Week 1 starter, Joe Flacco, is now the Cincinnati Bengals' starting quarterback, and Dillon Gabriel is running the show in Cleveland.

But according to one Browns insider, this wasn't how the season was supposed to go in Cleveland, at least at the quarterback position.

Mary Kay Cabot says Kenny Pickett was supposed to be Browns starter

In an appearance on 92.3 The Fan, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot revealed Kenny Pickett was supposed to be Cleveland's starting quarterback in Week 1, until his hamstring injury derailed those plans.

"I really do believe, and I believe the team believed this as well, if they could get good, clean quarterback play, they could hang around this season. None of that happened. It went off the rails. It started with Kenny Pickett suffering a serious hamstring injury in training camp. That really just derailed all the plans. He was supposed to start the season as the starter," said Cabot.

"That is what was supposed to happen. Joe Flacco wasn’t supposed to be the starter of this football team; he was almost an afterthought when they signed him. They were designing the offense of what Kenny could do well."

If what Cabot is saying is true, it's a fairly stunning revelation and one that provides another layer of fascination surrounding the Browns' decision-making process.

Despite their reported preference, Pickett's hamstring injury threw a wrench in those plans, and he ended up getting traded to the Las Vegas Raiders before the start of the season.

Now, the Browns will sink or swim with their rookie quarterbacks, and so far, they're just barely treading water.
