The Cleveland Browns are looking to bounce back from what was a terrible 2024 season that saw them win just three games. In order to do that, several things have to go right, including their defense improving from what was a down year.
The Browns ranked 28th in the NFL in defensive DVOA against the pass in 2024, and finished 25th in total defensive DVOA. And while the Browns won't have a high bar to clear in 2025, they may be without one of their top defensive backs. Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. suffered an Achilles injury on Tuesday.
"Martin Emerson Jr. suffered what’s an Achilles injury in today’s practice," Garafolo reports. "He’ll undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the injury but the expectation is it’s a significant tear."
This is a massive blow to a Browns' defense that needs all the help it can get after a down season. If Emerson is indeed done for the year, there is very little depth behind him that the Browns can feel comfortable about.
