Joe Burrow's Wednesday press conference raised a lot of eyebrows around the league, according to ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter.
"You know, I’ve been through a lot, and if it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for? Uh, so that’s the mindset I’m trying to bring to the table," Burrow told reporters.
His comments sounded like a guy either contemplating retirement or a change of scenery, and that's exactly what Schefter reported he's hearing from league executives.
Adam Schefter says teams are keeping an eye on Joe Burrow
"I thought the most intriguing comments I heard from anybody were Joe Burrow on Wednesday in Cincinnati, talking about the fun he's having or not having and his future there basically. I could tell you this: other teams in the league took notice of that. I could tell you that for a fact, I know that because I was texting with some of them," Schefter said on his podcast.
"Andrew Luck, when he retired, had played 86 NFL games and been sacked 174 times. 86 games, 174 sacks. Joe Burrow has played 13 fewer games, 73, and been sacked 203 times. So he's played 13 fewer games and been sacked 29 more times than Andrew Luck was. And he sounded like a guy on Wednesday who was deeply reflective, contemplative, and thoughtful about how he wanted his future to proceed. Those were alarming words."
Is it possible the former Heisman trophy winner is considering hanging it up? Possibly. He's been injured a lot over the course of his career, and it can take a toll physically and mentally.
But even more intriguing is the possibility of Burrow cracking the door open for a change of scenery, which is exactly what Schefter is implying in his reporting.
