The Chicago Bears emerged out of this week's trade deadline not with a bang, but with a whimper. The club opted to preserve most of its future draft picks, ultimately bringing in one current piece to abet Chicago's current personnel, plus one 2026 seventh-round draft pick. And all it cost was the Bears' 2026 sixth-rounder.

An NFL scout recently unpacked the only present-day player Chicago acquired at this year's trade deadline, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, while in conversation with Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end, 26, has been well-traveled since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers burned their No. 32 first-round draft pick after winning the 2021 Super Bowl on the Washington prospect. Chicago marks Tryon-Shoyinka's third team in his five pro seasons.

'A Long Shot'

Across his eight contests with the Browns this year, he netted nine combined tackles.

“They’re taking a long shot on a guy with traits that can move pretty well off the edge,” the scout told Biggs. “He’s a little light in the (rear) and I’m not sure if he’s a guy you want to have setting the edge. But if they use him as a pass-rush specialist, he’s long and he’s fast and maybe they can get a little something out of him.

“There’s a reason he went in Round 1 — the end of Round 1 — but I have to wonder if he’s been able to refine any of his moves," the scout added. "Low-cost move for a team that wants to keep its draft capital in place. Why not?”

Ultimately, the Bears got to preserve most of their future draft equity for depth later while also addressing a position of need in a surprisingly solid 5-3 season start. Tryon-Shoyinka improves the team's defensive optionality, without costing too much.
