With the Chicago Bears’ season officially coming to a close after a 20–17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend, the organization has begun evaluating possible changes to its coaching staff. One familiar name already appears to be heading to Chicago.

Boston College offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Will Lawing is expected to join the Bears’ coaching staff in an as-yet-undetermined role, according to head coach Bill O’Brien, who spoke Tuesday via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

“He’s been with me for a long time,” O’Brien told Boston College reporters Tuesday via Finley. “But he had a great opportunity to go work for Ben [Johnson]. He went to North Carolina with Ben, and obviously the Bears are doing a great job. So we wish him the best.”

Lawing has served as Boston College’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons and has worked alongside O’Brien at multiple stops in both the college and NFL ranks.

He also has a long-standing relationship with Johnson dating back to their playing days at the University of North Carolina. While his specific position with the Bears has not yet been announced, Chicago currently has an opening at running backs coach, as Eric Bieniemy is expected to return to the Kansas City Chiefs as their new offensive coordinator.
